Free Screenplay Software - Screenwriting Tips 5

Here, you'll find a guide to several kinds of free screenplay software that can help you write a movie script in the right format. This is Part 5 of the CWN series on how to write screenplays. Click here to go to Part 1 of the series. At the bottom, you'll also find links to related pages with screenwriting tips and more free screenwriting software options.

Free Screenwriting Software - Zhura

Zhura is a free online scriptwriting tool. You don't have to download anything into your computer -- you just create an account on their website, and then you can log in from anyplace with an Internet connection. Zhura offer a lot of interesting features, including the ability to collaborate on a script with other writers (although you have to upgrade to a paid account to keep this collaboration private) and the ability to work on your scripts from your computer in offline mode.

Free Screenwriting Software - Plotbot

Plotbot is another free online tool which allows you to write scripts and collaborate with other authors. You can create both private or public projects and have control of who can access private projects and what they can do (edit the script, comment only, etc.) If you use Plotbot to collaborate on a script, the tool also stores a record of who did what and allows you to return to older versions. You can also download your scripts from Plotbot to XML or RTF in order to work on them offline.

Free Screenwriting Software - Scripped

Like Zhura and Plotbot, Scripped is an online tool for writing scripts, though not for collaboration with other writers. Basic features are free, and Scripped offers access to a "Pro" version with additional features (and bug fixes) for $4.95 a month.

Free Screenwriting Software - ScriptBuddy

ScriptBuddy is another screenwriting tool. However, although it is free to register and use ScriptBuddy, you have to upgrade to a paid ScriptBuddy Pro account (currently $15.50 for three months) "if" you want to print your screenplay properly. Since of course, you will want to print your screenplay, I'm not sure if ScriptBuddy should qualify as a free software. To be fair, let's put it like this: ScriptBuddy offer a fairly useless software (writing, but not proper printing) for free. They currently charge $15.50 for three months for a software you might actually want to use.
