Story Ideas About Secrets and More...

Here are some story ideas you can turn into fiction. You can use any of these prompts to write a dramatic story, a comedy, or a thriller. At the bottom of the page are links to hundreds of other writing prompts.

Fiction Prompts about Secrets

1) Your character is an insurance salesman. But to impress his new girlfriend, he implies that he has a top-secret job that he can't talk about. This strategy works -- the girlfriend seems impressed. But, lately, your character has noticed a certain black car that seems to be following him around...

2) Your teenaged character keeps a secret diary in which she writes what she really thinks about everyone in her school. Then one of her classmates finds the diary and publishes it on the Internet...

3) Your character's ex-girlfriend shows up at his house one night, saying she needs a place to hide, but refusing to explain what's going on or why there's blood all over her clothes. Your character doesn't feel right turning her away...

4) Your character hates his job and especially his boss. He secretly goes to a job interview with another company and receives a surprising offer. The new company wants him to keep his current job but to act as their spy. In particular, they want him to copy files for them from his boss's computer..

Fiction Prompts about Travel

1) Your character wants to take a vacation, but is broke. She decides to stow away on a cruise ship...

2) Your character is traveling by train through a foreign country. The train stops in a little town, and the man who is sharing her compartment gets off. Suddenly, your character realizes that her purse is missing. That man must have taken it! She gets off the train to look for him, but the train station appears to be empty. While she's still looking, the train pulls away, leaving your character with no money and no passport in an unknown town where she doesn't speak the language. And night is falling...

3) On a business trip, your character starts an affair with a woman he meets at the hotel bar. What his wife doesn't know won't hurt her, he thinks. But then his wife shows up at the hotel to surprise him...

4) It's 20 years in the future, and space tourism has become a reality. Your character signs up for a trip to the moon. But two days into the journey, the captain of the spacecraft confides in your character that that's not where they're really headed...

Fiction Prompts about Books

1) Tucked in a library book, your character finds a hand-written note begging for help from someone who claims to be held prisoner against her will. Your character decides to investigate. The first step is to try to identify the last person who checked out the book from the library...

2) Your character is thrilled when his/her short story is published in a magazine and sends copies to everyone. The short story is about someone who is hiding a dark secret. Unfortunately, your character's friends and family and, especially, his/her spouse, all assume the story is about your character. "It's fiction!" your character insists, but no one believes him/her, and their reactions begin to tear apart your character's life...

3) Your character reads a book of poetry that seems to speak to his/her innermost feelings. When s/he hears that the poet will be signing books at a local bookstore, your character is excited to meet someone s/he imagines to be a soulmate. But the encounter with the poet will not turn out the way your character expects...

4) While house sitting for a friend, your character picks up what at first appears to be a cookbook -- paging through it, your character realizes that the recipes in it aren't for food, but are magic spells...
